Assassin’s Creed Line Dancing At New York’s Comic-Con

New York Comic-Con’s Just Dance 3 stage was always filled with an interesting mix of cosplayers, but these are my favorite: A dozen assassins from Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed line dancing to Sugarhill Gang’s Jump On It with the help of Ubisoft’s other major hit… Just Dance.
It’s a tad long, but you should probably skip over to three minutes in to see the special guest appearance.

Lessons Learned With A New York Comic-Con Press Badge

Because today is mostly press, there is no cosplay parade to follow on the way to the Javits. I’m very lucky to not get lost.

The press lounge is exactly like a panel room but with less people, all of whom are Very Important, and more cardboard coasters for our Very Important Drinks. Sidebar: No drinks were actually served.

At the “press and pros” only panels, all of which are about libraries integrating video games into their collections and programming, I learn that somewhere there is a library that uses their computers to host a Minecraft server. Note to self–find that library.

The show floor hasn’t opened yet, which leaves me to wander the lobby and talk to cosplayers. I meet Goku and Kairi (seperate occasions) and sign up for a 5 Gum Newsletter. That’s OK, because Goku has cool hair, and the newsletter entitles me to free gum and a t-shirt. I try using my press badge to get into the show floor early, but no dice.

I have an interview with Michael Grant, who wrote the Animorphs series among other teen/young adult fiction. We talk about his new book, BZRK, which already has a huge online community consisting of a bunch of websites, even though the book doesn’t come out until February. The book is about micro-biological war. Michael tells me there are two and a half pounds of bacteria on a person at any given time. There is even some in our eyelashes.

I skip the after-parties I’ve been getting emails about for weeks, and head home to vigorously wash my eyelashes.

Uncharted 3 Fortune Hunters’ Club Is Your Ticket To Discounted DLC

Eschewing the generic Season Pass label many games are using to package together downloadable content, Sony and Naughty Dog opt for the much classier Fortune Hunters’ Club to give Uncharted 3 fans a discounted price on upcoming DLC.

Available now for preorder on the PlayStation Store and at select video game retailers, the Uncharted 3 Fortune Hunters’ Club allows players to drop $US24.99 on more than $US45 worth of downloadable Drake goodness. Drop the cash entitles the player to the first four multiplayer map packs and the first three skin packs, the first of which is due out next month following the game’s November 1 release. Players will also score an exclusive Fortune Hunters’ Club theme, and will be alerted to new DLC releases via messages on the PlayStation 3′s XMB.

CCP Now Working on World of Darkness at a “Much Slower Pace”

“We still very much have an operation here in Atlanta,” he continued, “but it’s much smaller than it was before. It’s about 100 people that are here remaining, working on customer support and World of Darkness, but they are also adding value to EVE Online this winter, and there will also be a team here working on Dust as well.”

Deep Silver Dragging Chain on Dead Island Console Patch

“We’re going to work on getting the update out as soon as we can – hurrying it along too fast will just give us a bad patch,” the Polish dev told VG24/7. “People put so much pressure on devs to announce specific release dates and then when something happens to change that they just rage again. I’ve seen tons of instances of fan rage when devs [announce delays]. ‘Oh it needs more time? It must be shit then.’”

Vietnam Was Hell, Not A Series Of Green Corridors

Vietnam is a war that still looms large in the American psyche, both in terms of its impact in modern history and its portrayal in popular culture. Yet for all the protests, rock n’ roll and classic films that came out of the war, good Vietnam video games are hard to find.

This is mostly because what made the war, what defined the nature of the conflict, wasn’t something you could easily replicate in a game. Open wars, fought on battlefields between identifiable combatants, are easy. That’s why there are so many shooters and strategy games based on the Second World War. Those wars had regions of control, and rules, and those are the kind of things you need for a video game.

Vietnam did not. It was a war fought everywhere and nowhere. There were no front lines, enemies were tough to distinguish from friends (or at least the innocent). What defined it, then, was not a clash of arms, two sides meeting in open battle. It was the jungle, the mystery, the confusion.

Games have found it tough to replicate this, most – Black Ops most recently – simply using it as a backdrop for just another corridor shooter, which captures neither the accuracy or the feel of the war. There’s one game, though, that did. And it managed this back in 1993.

Rumour: Fresh Staff Cuts At 2K’s Canberra Studio

We’ve just received word from an anonymous source that 2K’s Canberra studio, which was renamed 2K Marin in a recent shuffle, has undergone redundancies, with up to 15 staff members losing their jobs.

At the moment that appears to be the extent of the damage, but in an increasingly hostile industry environment, which has seen multiple local studios close over the last couple of months, losing staff members is not a positive place to be.

We’ve been in contact with 2K locally and hope to get an official update soon.

If you were let go by 2K Marin, and you wish to get in contact with us, email us here.

Arkham City Is (Maybe) Mark Hamill’s Last Performance As The Joker

Arkham City is pretty damn special, so the fact it’s out this week is good news. That good news has been tempered with a little sadness, though, as it could be the last time we’ll ever hear Mark Hamill lend his voice to The Joker.

The star of General Hospital and The Big Red One (oh, and Star Wars) first played the part of the Dark Knight’s arch enemy in the 1992 Batman animated series, and has been popping up to reprise the role ever since. He, along with many of the cartoon’s other cast members, was involved in Batman: Arkham Asylum, leading to his wonderful performance in Arkham City as the very ill, very tired Joker.

While the above tweet reads very much like a farewell, Hamill played it coy a few months back when he seemingly retired from the role – again, over Twitter – only to later step back from the abyss.

Here’s hoping he’s just fucking with us. Again. A Joker without Mark Hamill is, to many fans under the age of 40, just a strange man in a fancy suit.

Why Turn-Based RPGs Should Never Die

You've grown up with Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, Grandia and countless other traditional JPRGs which make use of that tried and tested you hit, I hit turn based combat mechanic. You've wandered the vast expanse of numerous identikit dungeons wincing ever so slightly each time your screen swirls or explodes into yet another random battle. You've become irritable, nay, irate as your party is wiped by a boss who seems so powerful you think it must be one of those 'this boss is meant to kill me' moments, at least until the screen goes black, melancholy music kicks in and before it's even had the chance to fade in, you know the screen's going to read: 'GAME OVER'.

Yet, you load from your last save point.

You slog through the dungeon all over again, you whizz through the random battles, you find the super boss repellant item which makes that uber-boss a total doddle, you rejoice in your perseverance and you rinse, wash and repeat for 60 hours until the game is finished.

Sound familiar? If so, you are a true JRPG fan and you're part of dying breed. Search enthusiast forums and you're bound to find plenty of fans who are calling time on turn-based combat as a pre-historic gaming convention comparable to men-only voting or slavery in terms of it having no place in modern society. But I really don't understand why. Turn-based combat to me has had as much innovation over the years as shooting things in the face has, you just have to know where to look.

Rewind to 1997. On November 17th, European gamers were falling over themselves to buy a game called Final Fantasy VII. To date, according to VGchartz, FFVII has shifted 2.7 million units in Europe and a staggering 9.37 million worldwide making it the most successful turn-based JRPG of all time.

I remember I was still at school when FFVII launched and going over to a friends house to watch him play it. I was blown away by the graphics and what I pieced together of the story. Immediately afterwards, a Playstation went on my Christmas list along with this game. It literally couldn't come soon enough. A lot of my friends also bought into the hype, shelling out £44.99 in order to be a part of what was being lauded by some critics as 'one of the most important games of all time.'

It was amongst these friends I encountered my first turn-based combat naysayers and retrospectively it makes me think FFVII may also have been one of the most traded in/returned games of all time (though I can't really back that up)!

"It's boring innit? You hit them, they hit you, there's no skill. I took it back to the shop" - This was back in the days of Game's 10-day no quibble money back guarantee...

"Why do I have to randomly fight shit? It doesn't make any sense and all you do is press X to win"

"Why has Cloud got stupid hair?"

"Tifa has massive tits."

I'd try to reassure them that it was about the story, that the turn-based combat was deep and tactical if they'd just give it the chance and that the anatomically unlikely appearance of Tifa was keeping in line with the Japanese aesthetic (it's possible at 16, I worded this slightly differently). For the most part though, kids in my year weren't interested. They would rather shoot things in the face and how could I argue with that. I however, fell hard and fast for the JRPG and never looked back.

This disdain for turn-based combat has reared it's ugly head many times over the past 13 years with criticisms levelled at this tried and tested JRPG convention that I've never been able to understand. I don't like FPSs (in truth, I'm just not very good at them!) but I can understand why millions of people rushed out to buy Black Ops and would never pour scorn on that game for not only being incredibly similar to Modern Warfare 2, but to my inexperienced FPS eyes, being incredibly similar to every other military shooter. I'm sure Battlefield: Bad Company and the new Medal of Honor do slightly different things to Black Ops but ultimately they're all about shooting the enemy and arguing with 13-year-olds online. Right? No. People undoubtedly enjoy these games because of the way a tried a tested formula has been tweaked and implemented to produce an enjoyable gaming experience. It's the same for JRPGs and turn based combat, you just have to know where to look.

There's a post on Destructoid ( http://www.destructoid.com/... - actually one of the more well-rounded criticisms of turn-based combat from a self-confessed JRPG fan) where the author cites the unrealistic nature of turn-based combat as his main reason for hating it. He talks about it being unrealistic to stand there and wait for someone to hit you only for your attacker to stand idly and wait for you to hit him back. He's got a point I guess, but I don't play games for the realism. I definitely don't play JRPGs for the realism.

PS3 or 360... which is REALLY Better?

I own a PS3. I like my PS3. I have never played an Xbox 360. So, to be honest, I don't know what I'm missing. Therefore, I'm not missing anything. I'm fine with my PS3. Does that make me a "Fanboy?" I don't think so.
From the Urban Dictionary:

"An arrogant person who goes into an outburst every time something he likes is questioned. Fanboys usually accuse others of being fanboys. Usually use 1337 and swarm MMORPGs. Fanboys caused a lot of fallout between people when they started arguing about consoles. If you insult something that a fanboy likes, he will spam your computer up and try to insult something that you like. Most words a fanboy uses are in 1337 or end with 'X0RZ' and they spell the word 'the' as 'teh' because they think that it is 'teh ro><0|2Z!!!'"

Ok... now that I'm done proofreading that Godawful definition, I think I can safely say that I'm not a fit. However, I think EVERYONE knows someone who is.
PS3 fanboys like to go on about the power of the PS3's processor, the Blu-Ray, the 250,000 exclusives coming out in 2011, and they try and find some numbers somewhere that PROVE that it's selling faster than the 360. 360 fanboys like to bring up the popularity of their system, the sales numbers, the attach rate, and of course, "CoD is better on the 360."

I have one question for all the fanboys....

SO F'ING WHAT???

The PS3 has Uncharted, Infamous, Little Big Planet, Heavy Rain, Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo 5, Demon's Souls, Haze, Killzone 2 and 3, Resistance, MAG, Warhawk, Yakuza 3 and 4, and Echochrome.

The 360 has Halo, Gears of War, Forza Motorsport, Alan Wake, Crackdown, F.E.A.R, Fable, and Ace Combat 6.

BOTH systems have, Assassin's Creed 1, 2, and Brotherhood, GTA4, Final Fantasy XIII, Red Dead Redemption, Just Cause 2, Prototype, Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and just about anything put out by Electronic Arts.

So which one is better? Does it matter? All that REALLY matters is which one do YOU prefer? You want to play Little big Planet? You need a PS3. Want to play HALO 3? Gotta get a 360. Want to play Assassin's Creed 2? Then FLIP A FRAPPIN COIN! Or get both. Your gaming choices don't affect me. My gaming choices don't affect you. If I want to play Metal Gear Solid 4... will that interfere with your CoD experience? If I want to play Heavy Rain, or Gran Turismo 6 1/2, or CoD 31, or Hannah F'n Montana, how is that going to affect your library?

Your opinion is your opinion, my opinion is my opinion. How is this difficult? Both systems have something for everyone. So go fire one up and play.... and have fun.

The silver age

We're now settling into the midlife of the current console generation. Each generation seems to go slightly longer than the last as hz increase exponentially. Interactive gameplay has been the name of the game for the tail end of the last decade. Sony and microsoft were left far behind in the sales race compared to Nintendo’s wii.

To make up for this both companies intend to keep their current consoles on the market for an optimistic ten years. Which leaves much unsaid for overlap of the next console, which as the ps2 has shown us can be quite considerable, or as with the original xbox quite short.

I expect we’ll see all three companies expand heavily on the area’s they have recently been heading. Nintendo will most likely announce a new console the soonest. They have the most money to put into development, and also their console is the least powerful being left behind as people upgrade their televisions slowly but surely. While they could easily ride out game sales on the wii for a number of years the smart move would be to try and ride the hype of it at the end. If they announced or released in a year and a half or so with a reasonably priced console as powerful as their present competition they would be in a good spot for close to a decade. They would of course have to top the standard motion gimick. I have no speculation except hearsay and options they may have as to what they may do. I doubt it will be based on the technology they presently use, but will be motion based in someway. Or possibly something outlandish like reading your mind.

Microsoft will likely announce a decent amount of time after nintendo, as kinect is supposed to be seen as a new console. We probably won’t see anything from them for three or more years. What will be interesting is the next version of their console, I expect an integrated evolved version of the kinects motion parts. A refined high fps hd depth sensing camera, probably with other abilities, maybe a completely redesigned controller to work along with it. The intervening years will see the motion interface concept they presently dabble in come to fruition. It’ll be what everybody imagined when they first heard of Natal.

Lastly Sony can be expected to lean heavily on the longevity of their consoles and continue optimization of the playstation platform. In four or quite possibly five years sony will again declare that the next generation starts when they say so. Sony has been quite public about what options their considering. Obviously they are into 3D, accelerometers, cameras, compass’, gyroscopes, and enhanced reality. They also file a great many strange patents, and show off futuristic tech demo’s at events. Magnetic sensors, sonar, ps3’s playing hologram pong, multiple consoles running as one and more. Theirs really no telling what they’ll put into their next machine, likely many if not all of the options they have available. A great many processors, whatever the competition has, plus whatever they were already working on before they noticed the other guy s had something cool and assimilated it into the playstation collective.

Angry Birds for PC

Finally, those birds that everybody likes has arrived on PC. After iPhone, iPad, Android and other mobile versions, also iPhone cases and toys, Angry Birds has finally arrived on the PC thanks to the Intel App Up store. It’ll work fine and dandy on laptops and netbooks and will cost you only $4.99 to download. Nice price for this lovely game.

Angry Birds is a global phenomenon in mobile gaming and the top grossing iPhone app of 2010. So if you’re not a smart-phone wielding hipster, you no longer have an excuse not to be part of this franchise.

Overall it’s pretty much an identical game play experience to the iPhone app, with some minor differences. It’s snappy, gorgeous, and it sounds amazing. On the netbook version you use a mouse or trackpad instead of touch. There is an open hand icon when the mouse is in hover state, and a closed hand icon when you are clicking or dragging. This visible clue when pulling the slingshot is a nice aid. It allows you to fine tune shots more than just observing the angle of the slingshot band.

Angry Birds for PC

Larger screen means more visibility in the game. On many levels you can see the target that can’t be seen on the iPhone. The previous shot trail is more easily seen, allowing fine tuning of your next shot. Overall the animations and physics seem to have more fluidity.

In terms of features, options, menu etc it’s pretty close to the original. On the netbook the replay level icon has been added to the game space. So you don’t need to pause first then replay. If you start off with bad shot, just click the replay icon, then you can start over. Saving a click is nice. There is a Menu button in the Pause menu that gets you back to the Start screen. There are some things not in play on the netbook version. The leader board and achievements are not available in the main menu. The Golden Eggs are there.

Angry Birds strikes an interesting balance of repetitive, simple tasks and challenging game play working for the many scenarios. So, if you liked this game on your iPhone or Android phone, you’ll sure like it on your big PC screen. If you are new player, don’t hesitate and join the fun now.

You must know and recognize the game from the Rovio, Angry Birds.

This game consists of seven birds with super abilities are different. By using slingshots, you can control the jump and the height of ill-tempered birds to tear down the building where the collection of green pork fat is shelter.

Where is a funny collection of birds swelled, turned into a grumpy group of birds which destroy the kingdom of lustful pigs these cunning thieves.

Angry Birds now not only for the iPhone, Android OS, PS3 and PSP. even Angry Birds has been available in Ovi Store for Nokia. And now Angry Birds have been available for Windows XP and Windows 7

Free Angry Birds for PC

Plenty of dodgy website owners want to rip off Google and push traffic towards their sites on the bogus promise of the free version of Angry Birds for PC. This is only a scam but in fact there exists a download free Angry Birds for PC nevertheless, you will need to move quickly to take advantage of that offer

Finland games producer Rovio Mobile has produced their very 1st version of Angry Birds Game for the Apple iPhone. This particular game was immediately caught by the iPhonesters, and Rovio understood that they will become successful. That has been fine. However, Rovio needed to get going by recoding Angry Birds Games for several programs, which become easier for small companies to get done.

Several weeks went by and finally, the Nokia and Android users could get themselves the Angry Birds Game. After that, the RovioMobile switched their attentions to the huge users of the PSP or the Play Station Portable and the PS3. That has been an additional huge porting project for Rovio operations.

During that time, the PC users have been reading and hearing rumors regarding Angry Birds for PC. Ultimately, in January, Angry Birds for PC was released, and downloading is not for free. However, not everybody is willing to pay for $5 for just a game, even if they will enjoy playing with it. These days, several users have grown to be familiar of getting some thing for free, so there are many who are on the lookout for a totally free Angry Birds for PC download. It can be downloaded via Windows 7 and Windows XP and Vista, or Mac support. But downloading can only be downloaded if you have an internet connection for the process to activate successfully.

Angry Birds pc is one of the well-known games that have taken the popularity with over 200 million downloads. The availability of this game is taking place in almost all of the popular platforms. In addition to playing the game online in the browser you can now download it on your laptop and take it wherever you may go to enjoy the amazing games, enabling you to play whenever, wherever you go. Take it to your workplace or even in the park, while resting and basting under the sun. Probably launching the Angry Birds for PC the wisest and the best move the game maker ever made.  This availability made for the millions of platform owners, even made the popularity of Angry Birds known to more video-gaming enthusiasts more than over.

    - Angry Birds PC Updated

    The PC version was updated last week which we talked about in this post. This update will finally include all episodes of Ham ‘Em High and the two chapters of Mine and Dine. I’m sure this is welcome news for all the PC players who have been feeling left out. It shouldn’t have taken this long to get all the episodes out but that’s in the past now so lets just get to playing. Since all the chapters are available you also have access to all of the golden eggs. You can finally complete your collection!

    As a side note because I didn’t want to do an entire post about the subject, have you all seen the Angry Birds bra? It’s available over on etsy  you should go check it out. I personally don’t know anyone who would wear it but i’m sure there is someone out there  who would. I don’t recommend buying this for you girlfriend or wife unless she really loves angry birds.

Disney-branded Facebook games coming in 2012, Playdom head says

Can we all just say, “finally?” During a panel named “The Rise of Social Games” at the f8 Facebook Developers Conference in San Francisco, Disney Interactive and Playdom head John Pleasants revealed that two to four Facebook games surrounding Disney xd brands will hit Facebook in 2012. The general topic of the panel was the fact that branded social games are taking off.

Pleasants was joined on the panel by Kabam CEO Kevin Chou, EA Interactive head Barry Cottle and Zynga CBO Owen Van Natta. Facebook director of games partnerships Sean Ryan moderated the panel with the preface that branded games will take over the Facebook platform. And he might be right: EA just released The Sims Social, Zynga will soon re-brand its new Adventure World with Indiana Jones and Kabam recently announced The Godfather: Five Families.

Playdom, which Disney acquired in July 2010 for a whopping $740 million, is ahead of the pack with two branded games on Facebook: ESPNU College Town and ESPN Sports Bar & Grill. Both games performed well, thanks to advertising through the ESPN TV network. While Disney owns the ESPN brand, notice how neither of those actually involve the insanely popular Disney characters we’ve come to love.

Honestly, we’re surprised this didn’t happen sooner. Consider this: Disney has its own cable TV channel through which it could, in theory, advertise whatever it wants. Pleasants didn’t get into why it’s taken this long for disney channel games to throw its cast of characters into Facebook games, but did reveal the power of the Disney name.

Gnome Town, which Playdom launched in the summer–and we enjoyed quite a bit–peaked at 530,000 daily players. But just plopping the Disney logo on top of the existing one made users more likely to spend in the game just through trust of the company’s name, according to Pleasants. “We think it’s an advantage, if you put game play first,” Pleasants said.

It’s comforting to hear this emphasized by these developers. (Kabam’s Chou shared the same sentiment.) Branded games on Facebook are OK in my book, but the last thing anyone wants to see is the genre become a branding machine.

Thinking about PS4

Before reading, I'd like to clarify that I do not know anything confirmed about the next playstation. By the way, you are probably going to see the letters P and S a whole lot. Also, if you don't want to read the post explaining things, summed up points are available at the bottom for those who TL;DR.

Ok, ever since news of a new Nintendo console broke out, I couldn't help but think about the next Playstation, the PS4. And from that resulted a list of what I'd like to see and expect in the next playstation, which needless to say, would be called the PS4.

-First off, backward compatibility with ps3 products. Not just PS3 games but of course PS3 controllers like the DualShock3, Sixaxis and PS Move (and NGP). Why? Well, of course for the pretty awesome PS3 exclusives BUT also to save cash. If the PS4 was backward compatible with PS3 controllers, gamers would be able to have enough cashola to buy games and not waste it on new controllers. Another being that loads of PS3 owners would be pissed seeing as their costly products wont be usable.

-Next that would probably be coming with the PS4 is a new digital format. Why? Well, the ps1's format was CDs, ps2's being DVDs and finally, ps3's with the well known Blu Ray. The common factor to all playstations throughout the years is that each Sony gaming console always differed itself. So, probably we'll be seeing a new digital format for the PS4.

-What I would also like to see in the PS4 is the PS3's current features but slightly improved. The XMB or Xross Media Bar should stay, seeing as most owners are already accustomed to the user interface. The feature to turn on/off the ps3 with the controller obviously should be available. An upgraded PS browser would also be nice to have, the current one is pretty...okay. PSN would most probably be free or fanboys will howl.

-Finally, what is probably the most obvious and wanted by any PS loyalists are new exclusives. Yes, the current exclusives are pretty awesome to play and own but new IPs are always good to have, especially if they are PS exclusives. I do have to admit I'd like to see some PS games to continue on,like Sly Cooper 4, Little Big Planet 3, Killzone 4 and the most sought after Kingdom Hearts 3, if it hasn't been released by then.

With that, I hope that most of the things I listed down in the post turn true someday. And if they do...I called it! Thanks for taking your time to read this and if you have anything to share or comment or criticise, please do.

TL;DR points:
-Backward Compatibility with PS3 stuff
-A new digital format, like Hologram Discs or sumfink
-Slightly upgraded XMB, better PS3 internet browser, on/off feature without touching the playstation, free PSN
-New exclusives and continuations to games such as SC, KZ, LBP and KH.
-This wasn't mentioned above but a non-cuboid shape playstation would be nice.

Chinese Couple Sells All Three Kids to Play Online Games

A young Chinese couple has sold all three of their children in exchange for money to play online Nick jr games at Internet cafes, reports a southern Chinese newspaper.

According to Sanxiang City News, the couple met in an Internet cafe back in 2007 and bonded over their obsession with online video games.  A year later, the parents — who are both under 21 — welcomed their first child, a son.  Days after his birth, they left him home alone while they went to play online agame at an Internet cafe 30 km away.

In 2009, Li Lin and Li Juan welcomed their second child, a baby girl, and came up with the idea to sell her for money to fund their online game obsession.  They did so, receiving RMB 3,000 (less than $500), which they spent entirely shortly after.  The couple then proceeded to sell their first child and got 10 times as much for him — RMB 30,000, or about $4600.

Upon having their third child — another boy — the parents followed in their previous footsteps and also got RMB 30,000 for him.

They were finally turned into authorities when Li Lin’s mother found out what her son and his girlfriend had done.

When asked if they missed their children, the parents answered, “We don’t want to raise them, we just want to sell them for some money.”

Sanxiang City Newsreports the couple didn’t know they were breaking the law.

Does Microsoft Risk Losing Core Gamers?

Rumours circulating the gaming community today have stated Microsoft plans ten new IP's to be announced at this forthcoming E3, for Kinect. You can read where the rumour originated from here: http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

Now, while this news may excite some people there seems to be a quiet underbelly of frustration boiling in the Xbox community and are at logger heads with those who are firmly behind Kinect. I see a problem here and one that can be nailed down to how well Microsoft can conduct a balancing act.

Nintendo have been very successful with the Wii, attracting people who for the most part, have not really invested any time into a games console beforehand with games such as Wii Fit, EA Sports Active and family designed mini game packages such as Wii Sports and Wii Play designed to bring in such a audience. Microsoft saw how much Nintendo was rolling around in cash and wanted a piece of the action. Kinect was born.

The Xbox has been seen by many as a core gamers console, the Halo's, Call of Duty's, Gears of War, Mass Effect's and so forth so to turn that around and bring in a family type audience along with the core is a strategy that takes careful planning and clever strategy. So far the plan seems to be working with excellent sales numbers for both the Xbox 360 itself and the Kinect add on. So what's the problem?

The traditional high quality exclusives seem to be getting more and more anorexic as time passes. For major retail releases exclusive to the 360 we have Gears of War 3, Forza 4, X-Com and a possible 2011 release for Codename: Kingdoms (which is now strongly rumoured to be a Kinect title). While these games could possibly end being of a high quality, the line up is weak compared to the competition. It's all about justifying the reason to invest time and money into the box while during that time there is a chance you may think you could of spent that money elsewhere. This is what I see on gaming forums at the moment.

While I have no doubt the Xbox 360 is a excellent console, I feel this E3 is a massive one for them considering new hardware is on the horizon i.e Nintendo's Project Cafe. It's all well and good saying 360 still offers the Call of Duty's, Battlefield's and Mass Effect's but these games are on other systems also and at the end of the day it's about feeling justified in the investment you have made, if you see the same games on other systems plus a large exclusive library to go with it, you may be tempted to trade in and start over and this is where I think Microsoft should try harder, offer a stronger traditional controller line up exclusive to the platform alongside the Kinect line up.

Reading the reactions to the rumour above has been interesting, some have shown frustration, some unhappy and some quite pleased. Of course it's "rumour" at the moment and nothing is set in stone but if this turned out to be the case and no traditional high quality controller games were announced then it would be interesting to see if the frustration and unhappy population grow stronger, especially if Nintendo go forth with their rumoured strategy in developing a more powerful, core based console.

N4G's Oldest Problem:The Bubble System and How to Fix it.

The Bubble system is a great system at first. Under this system, the people who make good comments with actual thought and advanced grammar are rewarded with extra bubbles to make even more good posts with and people who troll and use indecent language are reduced to one bubble and cannot post more than once.

This works pretty good in theory. It's a merit system that rewards those who actually contribute something to the article instead of starting flame wars. Everyone starts out with the now default three bubbles and you are left to either build them up or take them away on your own. In theory, the best posters will have the most bubbles.

Unfortunately, that is not the case. The flaw of the bubble system comes in with 2 factors; the majority opinion and anonymity. If you make a post that goes against what most gamers agree with, you are sure to lose your bubbles. If someone makes a post saying that they do not like gears of war or uncharted does that mean they deserve to lose bubbles? The person was not trolling or using bad grammar but the majority of gamers here will take away his bubbles simply because they dont agree. Many members of n4g have chosen to interpret the bubble down button as a disagree button, which is not how it was intended to be used.

The second factor is what really destroys the Bubble system. Anonymity means that you can take a bubble from someone and get away with it because he doesn't not know that you did it. There is no way to report people who take away bubbles for unjust reasons so the majority of the website can freely control who gets more bubbles and who doesn't based on opinion alone.

This can call be fixed by removing the anonymity. If someone takes a bubble from you, you will receive a notification for it much like you do when someone replies to a message. If someone has bubbled you down for an unjust reason, you can report it to a mod. Then the mod will review it and decide whether to remove that vote on you or not. Under this system, no one should lose bubbles for no reason.

That is the easiest solution I can find for this system. The bubble system is not a bad system, its just a broken one that can be fixed. If you disagree with my solution to the problem that is ok but one thing you cant disagree with is that the current system has been exploited by the members of this site and must be fixed.

Console Gamer meets Cloud Gaming

User blog

It's been claimed to be a revolution in the gaming industry so naturally I couldn't resist trying out Onlive to see if it really does live up these big claims.

Onlive just recently launched in the UK and are offering a nice introductory order of one game for £1. The process was surprisingly simple, I created an account, downloaded the app and then before I know it, I was drawn into the world of Onlive.

The user interface was nice and friendly and my first port of call was the arena to check out what everyone is up to. This is probably one of the best features and that's purely because I can sit there and watch whatever game I want and really get a feel of a game - unless they quit and then of course I'll have to find someone else to stalk.

I can see that it isn't much different from just watching a few clips on Youtube, but you're diving straight in. It's a great experience and you get a great sense of what the game is like.

So next on my list was the marketplace. There were some games that had free trials which was pleasant so I started off with Assassins Creed Brotherhood. A couple of seconds later, I was playing Assassins Creed and it was just a bit of a 'wow' moment. Wow in the sense that it only took a couple of seconds and I was straight in.

Now Onlive is really a mix bag for me because there were two main scenarios when I was playing; scenario one is noticeable blurriness and input lag and scenario two, nice crisp visuals and smooth gaming. It quite often switched between one or the other.

So that is only a small snippet of what I experienced with Onlive. Do I believe it is revolutionary? Not yet, but it has so much potential to be something so revolutionary. If they nail those visuals and improve latency, I can see it as being so fantastic.

Have you experienced Onlive? Maybe you have the microconsole? It'd be great to hear from others about their Onlive experience, especially those on the other side of the Atlantic who have had it longer than us Brits.

Eurogamer 2011: PS Vita, Getting a Feel For It

I was not only lucky enough to catch the last group of the day to go hands on with Sony’s Playstation Vita but it was also a lightly extended session since the queue had closed behind us. Still, not enough time was given to ask ALL the questions and try EVERYTHING out but I did manage to get that all important ‘feel’ for the device. What I mean is, even in the relatively short time we were allotted, I got comfortable with all of the physical features of the hardware. This is what I’m going to try and describe to you now in hope that those of you interested in the powerful handheld can get an imaginative insight into what it’s like to use. I will use Little Big Planet as the reference game as it was the first thing I tried and it uses most of the PSVs features very nicely. Most of you may have read about all of this beforehand but I’d just like to share my personal experience with you anyway.

The first thing you notice about holding the device is also the thing with the most ambiguous future I’m afraid, the weight. I was shocked at just how light it was, when the girl handed me the PSV I held my hands out underneath expecting something as ‘stuffed’ with hardware features as this to give my wrists a slight need to adjust to counterweight. However it feels almost effortless to grasp but not so lightweight that it threatens to break or fly out of your hand. I immediately found myself trying to hold the device in one had then the other with surprising success. I asked if the model I was holding would be the same weight as the final build and was disappointed to hear that there would be a slight change with no indication as to whether it would be heavier or lighter. The demo model did in fact have the battery inside, according to the rep, and the weight change would probably be so slight as to be unnoticeable.

Now to find the buttons! Having owned a PSP, I was relatively aware of the basic button setup however I soon discovered that this may be more of a problem than an advantage. The inclusion of dual analogue sticks, while probably the greatest feature to hit handhelds ever, has forced the usual face buttons to shrink. It took me a few attempts to jump a small gap in LBP because I kept pushing the second analogue stick, thinking that it was the ‘X’ button. Once I got used to this though everything else snapped into place, the D-pad even seems to improve on the PSPs already good one, and it was now time to try out the touch screen.

My first touch evoked a mild feeling of disgust after realising just how grubby the screen had become. We can’t really blame the Vita for falling victim to the touch screen weakness though; you’d feel dirty too if 1000+ strangers queued up to fondle you all day. Returning, after a quick wipe, to the very first room in LBP which contained some of the ‘touchable’ blue material I had learned about just hours before in Sony’s PSV developer conference; I moved the object around just like I had done countless time before on various smart phones, it’s as intuitive here as it was then. There’s a certain small awe that comes with moving an object in a world as detailed as LBP using your own touch. The rear touchpad also came into use during the demo, where I was challenged with building a staircase for Sackboy by pushing ‘Tetris-like’ blocks out from ‘behind’. It’s a strange but immersive experience, which left me, optimistically, wondering about the possibilities of such input. Both front and rear touch screens are multi-touch and feel incredibly responsive, easily on par with top level smart phones.

The next challenge to put the PSV through its paces involved the six-axis function. I needed to tilt the device in order to bring a bridge across for Sackboy to jump onto; it works exactly how you would expect, after using both Move and DS3, you should feel very comfortable with this.

The dual analogue sticks seemed tiny at first, I worried that their decreased size would affect the range of control you had over manipulating the camera or minute aiming adjustments. However my concerns were put to rest after only a few short minutes of use I felt a common connection between the PSV sticks and the DS3. It might sound silly but it really did feel like I was playing a mini PS3 in my hands; which, in my opinion, is no bad thing, especially when you consider all the extra input and features available on the Playstation Vita.

I left the expo confident that Vita would be usable for me after being worried that my large hands (I’m 6’4” and can hold a basketball upside-down with arm outstretched) would be a problem. From build quality to responsiveness, Vita FEELS like a winner.

FarmVille Express: Zynga working on mobile browser version? [Rumor]

According to this single image found by a FarmVille Freak tipster, that very well may be the case. A mobile browser-based version of FarmVille may be in the works at Zynga. The website reports that readers are reaching this screen when attempting to log into their mobile farm via the existing. However, those readers' claims strike us as odd considering what's displayed is clearly the Safari browser on an iPhone.

FarmVille Freak goes on to say that the app isn't completely functional at the moment. When we attempted to reach this same page through the native FarmVille app for iPhone, we simply arrived at our existing farms. But when trying to access FarmVille from Safari by typing in "www.farmville.com," we were redirected to "m.farmville.com/fx/" and a message that reads, "Howdy Partners! FarmVille is currently not available for this device."

The fact that we were redirected to that web address suggests that perhaps mobile web version of FarmVille really is in the works, but the release of this image was accidental. If you remember, Zynga approached players earlier this year with a survey asking players what they would want from a mobile web version of the game. Why Zynga would suddenly release a mobile web version of its flagship game after working so hard to bring the native FarmVille app up to speed is beyond us.
FarmVille Express full
This news follows the mild announcement of a new Mafia Wars game for iOS, Shakedown. More importantly, this news comes just after Zynga's mobile head David Ko told The Guardian that he thought HTML5, commonly used by game developers to make mobile web game like what FarmVille Express appears to be, is still too early. Though, there is Facebook's Project Spartan to consider. We've contacted Zynga for comment.

NHL Superstars coming to Facebook in October

Adding to its popular brand of "Superstars" titles on Facebook, Electronic Arts has announced the production of NHL Superstars for Facebook. This new game, as reported by ShackNews, comes on the heels of EA's NHL 12 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 breaking franchise records for the biggest launch week in the franchise's history.

As for the franchise's jump onto the Facebook ice, we're told this: "NHL Superstars will bring an all-new NHL experience to millions of hockey fans by enabling players to build and manage their ultimate team of professional hockey players. With dynamic and accessible gameplay, fans can compete head-to-head in games against their Facebook friends from around the world."

While specific details are still lacking as to what we can exactly expect from NHL Superstars, we can't imagine EA / Playfish breaking the mold. We'll likely be able to collect cards that contain professional hockey players, and then trade those cards out to create the best team possible. Each player will likely have stats, and we'll be able to use those players in virtual hockey games against others for supremacy.

We don't have a specific release date for NHL Superstars, although the game is set to take to the ice sometime in October. We'll make sure to give you a complete look at the game when we know more.

Shaker transforms Facebook into a virtual bar with real music

Adam Rakib has a funny little story to share. It's about three minutes long and available in a high definition video on YouTube. Meant to introduce people to Rakib's new Facebook app, Shaker, the video also works as a decent primer on the social capabilities and limitations of Facebook interaction.

In case you can't view the video, here's a quick rundown of Shaker: It's a Facebook social game that takes all of your friends, and more importantly, friends of friends, and sticks them all into a virtual bar for a meet-and-greet.

It was also the grand prize winner of the TechCrunch Disrupt San Francisco 2011 start-up contest, beating out thirty other contestants for a Disrupt Cup and $50,000. For those of you who sport some social app savvy, another way to describe Shaker is that it's a mix of "Second Life, The Sims, and Turntable.fm" in one package, according to TechCrunch. If you love Playfish and EA's The Sims Social, Shaker promises to be The Sims Social for real.

Unfortunately, if you want in, then you're going to have to get in line for it. Since reaching 80,000 monthly active users, Shaker is now only available in "exclusive private beta." Right now, the number of monthly players is over 100,000. To register for the chance to try out Shaker, visit their website at http://www.atshaker.com/

CityVille goes Earth-friendly with Eco theme of items

If you live a rather green lifestyle in the real world and want to carry on that green-living into your town in CityVille, you can now do so by purchasing a series of "Eco" items in the game's store. There are items here focusing on plants, recycling, solar power and more, so let's get started with our look at what's available.

Solar Powered Park (Decoration)

    * Costs: 22 City Cash
    * Payout Bonus: 22% bonus to residences and businesses; bonus 22% to Eco theme

Recycled Art Museum (Community Building)

    * Costs: 65 City Cash
    * Adds 3,750 citizens to the maximum population gap

Solar Reflector (Decoration)

    * Costs: 4,000 coins
    * Payout Bonus: 5% to residences and businesses; bonus 5% to Eco theme

Sunrise High Rises (Home)

    * Costs: 70 City Cash
    * Population: 2,100 - 4,100
    * Rent: 326 coins every day

Tree Nursery (Business)

    * Costs: 45 City Cash

Energy Efficient House (Home)

    * Costs: 60,000 coins
    * Population: 190 - 370

In addition to these items, there's also an "Eco Mystery Crate" available for 45 City Cash each. Inside, you'll find one of four items at random: the Recycled Art Museum, Sunrise High Rises, Adobe Apartments or Tree Nursery. Depending on the prize you win, that could be a bargain for the Sunrise High Rises, which normally cost 25 City Cash more, but if you're just walking away with the Tree Nursery, it's not that big of a deal.

Still, this Mystery Crate along with these other Eco themed items will be available in the game's store for the next 15 days, giving you plenty of time to decide whether or not to purchase any/all of them. I highly expect additional Eco items to come out in the coming days, and we'll make sure to let you know if that happens to be the case.

What do you think of these Eco-themed items in CityVille? What other sorts of green technologies would you like to see represented in your town? Sound off in the comments.

FarmVille Lighthouse Cove Heritage Days Goals: Everything you need to know

While we haven't been introduced to many characters that call FarmVille's Lighthouse Cove home (perhaps they haven't heard about your restoration efforts after the storm), we do know that those that exist love to celebrate living near the Cove by throwing Heritage Days. Heritage Days appears to be a sort of carnival or fair, including animals and tons of food, and via a new three-part goal series, you'll be along for the celebration. If we're being specific, these Heritage Day goals mark the third chapter in the overall Lighthouse Cove storyline.

Hay Beautiful!

    * Get 3 Horse Combs
    * Harvest 70 Hay
    * Harvest 3 Horses

If you don't already have a Horse Paddock on your Lighthouse Cove farm, now would be the time to build one, as it's the only way you'll get through this goal without wasting some serious time. As the entire goal series expires in a week's time, you simply can't afford to waste that much! As an aside, yes, you could also luck into having Horses already available to Harvest, but for other folks, the Horse Paddock will allow you to skip the three-day waiting game and harvest the very next day. Finishing this first goal gives you 100 XP, a Fall Color Cow, 2,500 coins and a Steel Beam.

Horsing Around

    * Get 3 Horse Tiaras
    * Improve the Cove to Level 3
    * Harvest Lighthouse Cove

Many farmers will likely have passed Level 3 in the Cove's repairs long enough, but if you haven't, check out our guide to how the restoration process works. Meanwhile, you'll need to post a general news item to your wall asking your friends for the Tiaras. Finishing this second goal gives you 200 XP, a Fall Tree and 2,500 coins.

Set the Table

    * Get 6 Romantic Centerpieces
    * Make Wild Blueberry Pie Twice
    * Harvest 70 Red Clovers

The Romantic Centerpieces are earned through another wall post, while Blueberry Pie is made inside your Restaurant. It's made using two Chandler Blueberry, three Wheat and two Rhubarb bushels. For making it this far, you'll receive 300 XP, 2,500 coins, a Pet Run Mystery Animal and 10 Animal Feeds as your prizes.

As has become tradition now in Lighthouse Cove, this particular goal series has been shortened in order to give users a chance to tackle some bonus (ie: much harder) goals later on to finish off the chapter. We'll bring you a complete look at Chapter 3's bonus goals just as soon as we can, so keep checking back!

What do you think of these three Heritage Day goals? Will you be able to finish all three in time? Sound off in the comments.

FarmVille Lighthouse Cove Chapter 3 Bonus Goals: Everything you need to know

After celebrating Heritage Days in FarmVille's Lighthouse Cove, you'll be ready (but perhaps not willing) to tackle the next series of Bonus Challenges on your new farm. Past Bonus Challenge goal sets have been incredibly expensive to say the least, but depending on which sets of data with these newest goals is correct, you just might be in for a break here. We'll get to the discrepancy in a minute, but for now, let's take a look at the first goal out of three.

Bonus Challenge 1!

    * Get 3 Hobby Horse Rakes
    * Harvest 70 Cove Cranberries
    * Improve the Cove to Level 4

To earn the Hobby Horse Rakes, you'll simply need to post a general request to your news feed asking all friends for help at once. For finishing this first, fairly simple goal (admittedly), you'll receive 500 XP, a Fall Gnome and 2,500 coins.

Bonus Challenge 2!

    * Harvest 90 Chandler Blueberries
    * Harvest 1 Orchard??
    * Make Wild Blueberry Pie Twice

Here's where things get a bit hairy. According to in-game images that Zynga has provided, this second task is technically "Harvest 1 {item}," with a picture of an Orchard. This leads us to believe that you'll simply need to harvest a ready Orchard, which is incredibly simple. However, when speaking of the goals on the game's official forums, we're told that this task is really supposed to be "Expand to a Harbor Homestead," which would cost at least 50 Farm Cash, depending on if you had already expanded twice before to the 16x16 level. We'll let you know when we discover which one is correct. Either way, if you finish this goal entirely, you'll receive 1,000 XP, a Red Cedar Tree and 5,000 coins.

Bonus Challenge 3!

    * Harvest Lighthouse Cove
    * Make Black Raspberry Wine Twice
    * Harvest the Zoo

Raspberry Wine can be crafted inside your Restaurant using three Raspberry, two White Grape and three Chandler Blueberry bushels. As for the Zoo, you'll need to build one of these on your own (check out our guide for more), as you weren't given one when landing in the Cove proper. Only after it's been completed, and it's had a chance to become "ready" after 24 hours will you be able to finish this goal, and the overall Bonus Challenge series, off for good. Finishing this final goal in the trio gives you 500 XP, a Gorilla, 2,500 coins and 10 Animal Feeds.

This entire goal series will need to be completed in under a week, or else they'll expire and take your chance at these rewards with them. Since you still have quite a bit of time before these goals even activate on your land, however, why not plan ahead by building your Zoo, or even making these crafting recipes and then letting them sit completed inside your Restaurant? You'll need to save all of the time you can to finish these three goals in time, so every little bit of planning helps! Good luck!

What do you think of these Chapter 3 Bonus Challenge goals? Sound off in the comments.

FarmVille: Puppies leaving the store "soon"

And we'll file this one under "Flop." While plenty of FarmVille farmers may have adopted puppies, clearly they were in the minority. Let's face it - the puppy feature was far from perfect. With many puppies going for expensive Farm Cash prices, and then the possibility of them running away hanging over your head if you can't grow them fast enough, the entire feature apparently turned into more than we could take.

Apparently, Zynga feels the same way, as it's decided to end the feature entirely, announcing that it will remove all puppies from the store "soon." Now, if you happen to be a puppy owner, you don't have to worry about losing them, as you'll still be able to grow and train the puppies you've already purchased. On the other hand, if you were just waiting for a better breed, but do actively want a puppy, you can still purchase them. Here's its full announcement:

"Howdy Farmers, we've found plenty of homes for puppies, so you won't be able to find any more in the market soon. Not to worry though, you can still grow and train the ones you already have."

It's unfortunate that we don't know exactly when the pups will be taking their leave from the store, but I suppose this is one case where you'll want to make your last-minute purchases sooner, rather than later, just to be safe. As of this writing, you can still purchase one of six puppies. Here's the rundown of their prices (I wouldn't expect these to change):

Heeler - 65 Farm Cash
Border Collie - 300,000 coins
Border Collie (can't run away) - 65 Farm Cash
Golden Retriever - 65 Farm Cash
Sheepdog - 65 Farm Cash
St. Bernard - 65 Farm Cash
Terrier - 5,000 coins
Terrier (can't run away) - 65 Farm Cash

Again, there's no exact date for the puppies to leave the store, but I wouldn't delay if I were you (and I were interested in purchasing one or more of these pups). After all, it's likely that Pubble Kibble will disappear eventually as well (regardless of what the big Z says above), leaving you without a free way to grow your new purchase. We'll make sure to let you know if Zynga announces the final day of puppy availability, so keep checking back.

Are you disappointed to see puppies leaving the game, or did you ever bother with adopting / growing one? Sound off in the comments.

There may not be another Zynga game in which Energy is more important than in Adventure World. Every switch thrown, every puzzle solved and beastie whacked costs you the Facebook game juice. Players often find themselves without Energy minutes into an Expedition. But this isn't the time for whining--it's time to show you the value of upgrading your Tools and how to do it.

Tools: The Game Changer
If you noticed, each piece of debris and monster has a life bar, and normally take multiple hits with your Whip or Machete to whittle down. This, of course, quickly becomes a waste in later Expeditions purely due to the amount of obstacles in your path. But increasing the amount of damage your various Tools inflict against said baddies could considerably reduce the Energy spend in-game.

For instance, say a Snake has three hit points and is Level 5. Since monsters can hit back in this game, it could take three to five Energy before an enemy goes down. Now, imagine if you had upgraded your Whip to Level 2. Offing that Snake would take just two to four Energy with a beefier Whip. The same situation applies to Tools like the Machete.
Adventure World Tool Shop inside
And Now For Your How-To
Adventure World Tool Shop outsideUpgrading your Tools in Adventure World is simple. All you need to do is head back to Base Camp from an Expedition, and look for a makeshift hut that should already be in place in your headquarters. When you click on the Tool Shop, a window will appear featuring all the Tools you've found thus far on your journeys. Click on the Tool you wish to upgrade.

Once you click on a Tool to upgrade, you'll notice that each Tool costs Coins to upgrade. That's it--no asking friends to help you out with materials or farming certain crops for special items. Just the goods you find during your travels in search of El Dorado. However, Coins are actually quite rare in this game, so you'll need to save and spend wisely.

When you have enough Coins for an upgrade, just click on the appropriate icon to pay up. Tool upgrades are also level-locked, meaning you must reach a certain level for most Tools before being able to upgrade them using Coins. If you're feeling impatient, you could always unlock access to those higher level Tools early using Adventure Cash.

Just One Small Catch...
However, some Tool upgrades do require an extra boost: your Tool Shop. Yes, the building itself can be upgraded, too. And this time, you will need items from your friends. (Just think of how things work in CityVille.) Luckily, you only have to do this about twice to unlock access to all of the game's Tools. Then, it's back onto leveling up to access new upgrades for Coins.

Adventure World Cave of Doom Expedition: Everything you need to know

Over the past two days, we've brought you a look at two of the three new Indiana Jones-themed Expeditions in Zynga's Adventure World. Now, we're ready to finish off this new trio, and not a moment too soon, as Indy himself will be showing up in the game any day! This third Expedition is called The Cave of Doom, and it has us searching for one last Standing Stone in the middle of a cave.

The particular Expedition has a three day time limit, and requires 575 Supplies to begin. You'll also need two each of Food, Fuel and Water. Once you start, you'll learn that the cave you entered way back at the beginning of the game (in the Prologue Quests) is actually a lot bigger than you thought. We're returning here now to find the lost Standing Stone, but remember - watch out for spiders!

Rub That Stone!

    * Solve the First Puzzle to drop the West Wall
    * Solve the Second Puzzle to drop the East Wall
    * Push the Stone Halves Together
    * Take a Rubbing of the Standing Stone

For this Expedition, you're dealing with tons of puzzles, right from the start. The two pieces of this Standing Stone are perched high atop walls in a locked room. The room itself is locked with three more pillars, as seen below. You'll need to solve the Expected "Simon Says" puzzles to drop the two walls, and push various switches and levers along the path to unlock the room itself.

This Expedition also introduces us to torch switches, which block your path with walls. You'll need to press the appropriately colored switches to match the torches and walls you'd like to lower. Sometimes though, there are multiple switches in your path and by pressing the wrong one, you'll normally be confronted by a spider.

Find the Thieves' Documents

    * Recover the First Set of Papers
    * Recover the Second Set of Papers
    * Recover the Third Set of Papers
    * Recover the Fourth Set of Papers

Yet again, a group of thieves has beaten you to the punch with this Standing Stone. They've left a lot of stuff behind, and Professor Allen wants you to collect it so we can learn more about them. According to Allen, they're far too organized to be petty thieves, so we're out to find out just what they're up to. These Papers are found in boxes at various points along the map, blocked by some kind of debris (thorns, spider webs) or a Spike Trap.

Disarm the Thieves' Explosive Traps

    * Get 10 Pliers
    * Collect the Magnifying Glass
    * Disarm 4 Explosives

You'll need to ask your friends to send you the Pliers via individual gift requests. Remember, you have three full days to complete this Expedition, so don't panic at the thought of it just yet. Meanwhile, the Magnifying Glass is found early on (before lowering either of the two walls) at the top of the map, as seen below. The Explosives are found randomly scattered around the map (although you might have to clear some debris out of the way before reaching them), and once you've started gathering pliers, you can simply click on them to disarm them.

After finishing these three quests, you will have successfully completed Cave of Doom and will be ready to greet Indy in the game with open arms. Will we continue to learn more about these Thieves, or will they forever be one step ahead of us? We'll keep bringing you guides to Expeditions and story quests, so keep checking back with us to find out!

FarmVille: Is a free Duckling a sign of things to come?

The last time we were frequently given free Ducklings in FarmVille, we had yet to see the launch of the Aviary animal habitat in the game. One could theorize that the launch of the Ducklings back then were a warning for us that Ducks and Birds in general would become pretty important in the game in the future. If we take that route of speculation, then what does today's free Duckling mean?

First things first, you'll receive this free Duckling automatically when logging in (if you don't receive it yet, it's possible that the freebie hasn't "rolled around" to your game yet). Once you click on the "Place" button, you'll see that your Duckling is a Red Duckling (by all accounts, it doesn't seem that this varies across users), which can grow into anything from a Black, Blue or Red Swans or even a Rainbow Duck (with a few options in between).

Unfortunately, this free Duckling doesn't let you escape from the work of growing it, so you'll need to ask seven friends for help in nurturing your little Duckling. The quicker you do so, the more options you'll have when it comes to growing it into an adult, or you can simply sell the Duckling for a quick 100 coins of profit, if you'd rather not deal with growing it up.

If we go back to speculating, does this mean we might see a new Duck/Bird-themed item released in FarmVille in the future? Perhaps a set of Ducks will be released in the Lighthouse Cove theme? Or, maybe this isn't as complicated as all that, and is simply a gift from Zynga to us to keep us busy this weekend. Whatever the case, we'll keep an eye on things and will let you know.

Will you take the time to grow this Duckling into an adult, or will you just sell it? What sorts of other free items would you like to see Zynga give away? Sound off in the comments.

FarmVille Sneak Peek: Apple Bobbing feature coming soon?

With the fall season now upon us, it looks like Zynga will be releasing a new feature in FarmVille concerning a Fall staple at carnivals and parties: Apple Bobbing. Via a new Apple Bobbing Stand, seen in the banner above, along with at least five goals, we'll be able to apparently bring the chaotic fun of apple bobbing to our farms.

While the exact function of the Apple Bobbing Stand or even the accompanying goals has yet to be announced, there's always room for speculation. With the bag of Apples that we see above, it looks like the Apples themselves might be collectibles of some kind. Could this be the return of the token-collecting feature that sees us collecting dozens, if not hundreds of apples to redeem them for special fall-themed prizes?

Or, perhaps these goals will simply function as a way to reward us with this Apple Bobbing Stand, which will animate in some way (or serve some other purpose beside being purely decorative) to make it worthwhile. Whatever the case, it has this farmer incredibly interested in learning more, and if you're the same, make sure to keep checking back with us as we'll bring you all of the info about this supposed Apple Bobbing feature as soon as we know more.

Note: This is an unreleased feature, which may change before release or may never release at all (granted, that final option is incredibly unlikely).

Are you excited for Apple Bobbing to come to FarmVille, no matter its form? What do you think the Apple Bobbing goals will contain? Speculate with us in the comments!

FarmVille: Coin Tree and Giant Coin Tree now available in the store

While you may already have a collection of Giant Coin Trees on your farm(s) in FarmVille, if you're like me, you were probably fairly disappointed in the "giant" size of that particular tree. Well, be disappointed no longer friends, as Zynga has finally fixed the size discrepancy with these trees, making them truly giant (at least when compared to other giant trees in the game), and has even released them for purchase in the store.

Not only that, but we see the Level 1 tree of this pairing - the regular Coin Tree - also available to buy in the game's marketplace. The pair goes for 5 and 10 Farm Cash each, which is exciting for those that were tried of the 7/8-14 Farm Cash prices we've seen take over the store in the past few months. Again, this Giant Coin Tree is the same one you likely already have on your land to begin with, and you don't have to do anything special (or purchase any additional Giant Coin Trees) to automatically convert all of your existing trees to the new "Giant" size.

For a look at the two different trees, you can check out our picture at right. Keep in mind that the Giant Coin Tree used to look like the version on the left, which is now just the standard Coin Tree. The larger tree on the right is the Giant Coin Tree as it functions today in the game, the way it should have been all along.

If you don't happen to have one of these Giant Coin Trees on your farm, or you just wish to purchase the smaller version to go along with it, make sure to do it fast as they'll only be available for five more days.

Will you purchase either of these Coin Trees from the store? Did you notice that your Giant Coin Trees had grown in size automatically over the past few days? Sound off in the comments.

FarmVille Sneak Peek: Giant Jack-O'-Lantern collection event coming for Halloween?

My, my is Zynga ever predictable. It looks like a third Jack-O'-Lantern collection event will be coming to FarmVille to celebrate Halloween this year, asking users to collect pieces of candy or other themed items (called "Treats") in order to trade them in for collectible items inside a new "Giant Jack-O'-Lantern."

If the menu below is anything to go by, then FarmVilleFreak has discovered that the menu will allow us to not only collect Treats to fill a meter (as we're used to), but we might also be able to purchase the prizes themselves directly from the menu, if asking for Treats is too time-consuming for your liking (this could also just be a link to purchase Treats in bulk). Either way, keep in mind that some of the text in this window is a placeholder, as we'll of course be able to redeem our Treats for themed items, and not just six different "Purple Valentine Cows." Still, this gives us something to look forward to in the long run, as we know we'll be able to interact with friends to earn as many Treats possible within the few weeks that will likely be available to do so.

As for the Treats themselves, it looks like we'll be able to collect Candy Corn, wrapped pieces of Candy and perhaps even small Jack-O'-Lanterns to fill our Giant Jack-O'-Lantern to the brim. It would be great to see a return of the Haunted House as well, giving us free Candy daily, but a new item released for the same purpose also wouldn't be an entirely bad thing.

We'll make sure to keep an eye on all of the Halloween festivities in FarmVille, and will make sure you're the first to know when this Giant Jack-O'-Lantern (or Halloween collection event in general) kicks off in the game.

CrowdStar CEO: We want to create a game that reaches a billion people

The question is, however, can it be done? Speaking at this week's HTML5 Dev Conference in San Francisco, YouWeb chairman and CrowdStar--It Girl, anyone?--CEO Peter Relan (obviously not pictured) said, "We want to create the game that reaches a billion people." VentureBeat reports that the general consensus of the event was that HTML5 is the future of social and mobile gaming.

HTML5 is a web-based coding language that, in theory, will allow game creators to develop a single game that could be played across multiple devices through web browsers without a change in the experience. Currently, however, HTML5 isn't looking so hot as a gaming platform--HTML5 games aren't as sophisticated yet as even FarmVille on iPhone--but it's gaining steam.

"We sense that web 3.0 is here," Relan said during a panel at the conference. "Mobile devices will get to six billion people. They will become pervasive. We greatly overestimate what we can do with a technology in two years, and greatly underestimate what we can do in 10 years." Relan is confident that, from arcade-style games, HTML5 games will evolve into more complex experiences, citing games on the iPhone as an example.

And Relan shares this sentiment with a number of folks in the space. Rovio marketing exec Peter Vesterbacka has already mentioned his company's goals of reaching 1 billion players with the Angry Birds franchise. Even EA CEO John Riccitiello sees his company topping 1 billion players worldwide. And the mighty Zynga, despite being less than bullish on this whole dang-fangled HTML5 thing, is rumored to be working with Facebook on its not-so-secret Project Spartan.

But wait a tick--we're talking 1 billion players of a single game, no? To do that, it's going to take not only the right technology, but a game with enough widespread appeal to hit critical mass. If anything, the number one challenge game creators will face in this effort isn't whether it is possible, but whether they can craft characters that folks of any background can fall in love with.

Do you think any of these companies could create a game that will reach 1 billion players or downloads? What do you think it will take to accomplish such a feat. Sound off in the comments. 1 Comment

FarmVille Pic of the Day: FeketeV's towering oak

Folks, just a few more hours and we'll be smooth sailing on weekend waves; it's a beautiful thing. But perhaps just as beautiful is today's featured farm, designed by the one and only FeketeV. This splendid FarmVille design takes a simple concept and makes it wonderful.

FeketeV clearly set out to make their farm into a tree. Simple. But folks, I'm sure you'll agree with me when I say that if one of us had attempted to design a tree farm, it definitely would not have looked this good. The detail is incredible, you almost forget there is a FarmVille farm plot underneath it all. From the shading on the trunk to the azure hay bale skies of deepest summer in the background, this farm is a masterpiece. The overlapping and cascading trees create a natural, organic effect that really makes this farm special.

What do you guys think of FeketeV's tree farm?

Empires & Allies: Play Adventure World, score a Red Vampire Jet

The cross promotions for Adventure World, Zynga's brand new giant Facebook game from Zynga Boston, have officially exploded. After taking tours through both CityVille and Mafia Wars, Empires & Allies players can now score their own limited edition item, the Red Vampire Jet, for giving the new game a ride. All you need to do is long into E&A and click on an icon of a red plane on the right of your game screen.

Once you click this, click on the button to jump into Adventure World. You have until Oct. 6 to reach Level 6 in the massive game to score the item. Since the item won't be given to players until that date, we're unsure as to what it does. But our best guess is that it will be an aerial military unit. And it looks quite interesting with a very "seaplane" look to it.

Before the bevy of cross promotions, Adventure World wasn't doing so hot. But now, after diligent in-game advertisements like these, Zynga Boston's debut has reached over 29.5 million monthly players, and it looks to soon topple E&A, according to AppData. Oh, and the fact that the game will soon be thoroughly branded with Indiana Jones will certainly help that growth. Things are on the up and up for Adventure World, and the team already looks to capitalize on this critical mass.

Are you going to play Adventure World for this new item? What do you think of the cross promotions in Zynga's games overall? Sound off in the comments. Add Comment

Adventure World Mountain Chase Expedition: Everything you need to know

As we told you yesterday, a trio of new Expeditions have launched in Adventure World, being triggered by the upcoming appearance of Indiana Jones in the game. First came the Great River Expedition, and now, we'll take a look at the second of two: The Mountain Chase. This particular Expedition requires you to have 400 Supplies and two each of Foods, Fuel and Water. You'll have a period of three days to finish this entire Expedition, which contains three quests to complete.

The story of this Expedition sees you gathering a rubbing from a second Standing Stone. However, you'll have competition for this stone, as a group of thieves have taken it, and you'll need to get it back. Let's get started!

Let the Chase Begin!

    * Collect the First Stone Piece
    * Collect Second Stone Piece
    * Use the Stone Base
    * Take a Rubbing of the Standing Stone

This quest is the main, overall quest for this particular Expedition, and it requires you to collect the various pieces of the stone, which has been broken up. You'll go through the thieves' campsites searching through boxes that may contain stone pieces, but not all of them do. There's no skill involved in this setup, but there will be some trial and error, so keep that in mind. While the first piece is held in a box, the second is held by a snake at the end of the path. The Stone Base is back at the beginning of the map.

Sweethearts and Sweet Tooths

    * Collect 3 Cocoa
    * Collect 12 Sugar
    * Use Cooking Fires to Bake 3 Brownies
    * Collect 3 Brownies

If anything, your research teammate Emily is definitely demanding. Just like in the Great River Expedition, you're sent on what might as well be a while goose chase by Emily in this Expedition as well, as she asks you to gather cooking ingredients for brownies that she can use to "woo her beau." Cocoa is found growing from large trees, while you can ask your friends to send you the sugar. The Cooking Fires are found inside the thieves campsites, and you'll just need to click on them when you have the proper ingredients to make the brownies.

Take Their Stuff

    * Collect 7 Backpacks
    * Collect 4 Maps

In this Expedition, you can think of Backpacks and Maps as though they were Red and Jade Vases. That is, they're scattered throughout the map, often blocked by pieces of debris, and by collecting them, you'll apparently learn more about the identity of these thieves.

When you've finally retrieved the pieces of the Standing Stone and have finished these other two goals, you will have completely finished the Mountain Chase Expedition. Indy still has one more job for you though, before he makes a true appearance, so keep checking back with us for more guides on completing that Expedition and more in the future!

Check out the rest of our Adventure World Cheats & Tips right here.

What do you think of the Mountain Chase Expedition? Do you think these "Emily-based" quests have any point of being in the game, or do you like the variety they add? Sound off in the comments.
